Excerpt from Contributions Towards an Index of Passages: Bearing Upon the Topography of Jerusalem, From Writings Prior to the Eleventh Century The Topographical Index contained in the following pages was framed by me, for my own use, in connection with a work on the site of our Lord's Sepulchre, on which I have been engaged, at leisure moments, for some time past. Partly for my own convenience, and partly from a desire that whether that work should ever be completed or not, something of the labour which it has entailed should not be lost, I have thrown this Index into print. It is not a compilation which, even were it perfect, could ever attract the public; and it is essentially imperfect, and only what it is styled - "a contribution." It may possibly, however, in the hands of one or two, be of service in abridging the time and trouble involved in a search for references among the writings of many centuries.
